Thursday Sept 11th, 6:30pm – Education Freedom with MS Representative Jansen Owens – Candidacy Announcement by Coleman Boyd for Senate District 26 (Hinds, Madison)
As co-chair of the newly formed Education Freedom Study Committee, Rep. Owen is at the forefront of evaluating and promoting broader school choice reforms.
Rep Owen will be talking about school choice initiatives, like vouchers and charter reforms and scholarship accounts, all rooted in the belief that parents—not bureaucrats—should make educational decisions.
He championed HB 1435, a bill allowing students to transfer between public schools without approval from their home district—highlighting parental choice and fairness; it also established funding and non-discrimination protections.
At his core, Owen advocates for fiscal transparency, smarter resource allocation, reduced testing, and elevating teacher pay to regional levels—reflecting his broader philosophy of empowering individuals and maximizing freedom.
Dr. Coleman Boyd — Candidate, Mississippi State Senate District 26
Dr. Coleman Boyd is an emergency physician and longstanding Christian pro-life activist from Mississippi. He has been involved in pro-life ministry since around 2007—his journey intensified after a spiritual awakening that spurred him to more active involvement on behalf of the unborn.
His activism reached national attention when, in March 2021, he helped organize and livestream peaceful demonstration at a reproductive health clinic in Mount Juliet, Tennessee. The demonstration led to his conviction under the federal Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE Act) and related civil rights conspiracy charges. He, along with others involved in the demonstration, were recently pardoned by President Trump.
Now, Dr. Boyd is boldly stepping out to run for Mississippi Senate District 26, which encompasses parts of Hinds and Madison counties. This district was represented by Democrat John A. Horhn for an impressive 32-year tenure from 1993 until mid-2025. In the 2023 election for Jackson mayor, Horhn ran virtually unopposed in both the Democratic primary and the general election—securing 100% of the vote each time.
Horhn’s prolonged incumbency reflected District 26’s status as a Democratic stronghold.
Senator Horhn’s decision to run for—and win—the Jackson mayoralty in mid-2025 led to the vacancy of his Senate seat. Consequently, Governor Reeves scheduled a special election to fill the seat on November 4, 2025, with both Democratic and Republican primaries to be held on August 5th.
Can a conservative win a senate seat in Senate Dist 26?
